Field Experience- Assignment 3A

During my field experience, I decided to teach gymnastics.  I believe that in order to progress in gymnastics, it is crucial that students first learn basic skills.  For the purpose of this assignment, I taught a forward roll.  A forward roll is a basic gymnastic skill that consists of tucking your chin to your chest and rolling forward smoothly on the floor.  I began by demonstrating a video (Gymnastics/Forward Roll) that informed and demonstrated students step by step of how to perform a safe forward roll.  I also demonstrated drills for warm up and proper stretches.  After, I used the Think-Pair-Share method for pre-assessment.  For post-assessment, I had students explain to me how to perform a forward roll and then demonstrate it for a grade.  After demonstration, I gave students feedback and a grade. Three points demonstrated mastery, two points proficient, and one point novice.  After feedback, If the students scored one point then they had the opportunity to fix their forward rolls and demonstrate it to me once again. For the rest of the class, they were able to move on to the next skill.

I believe that demonstrating the YouTube video on forward rolls helped students see how a forward roll  looks like.  When students are able to visualize how a skill looks like before they try it, then they get motivated to do it.  I also felt that it was important for students to explain to me how to roll before they demonsrtrated the roll.  When students explained how a roll is done then I knew whether or not they were ready to demonstrate.  Once students demonstrated the roll I was able to check for understanding, corrected them, and gave them feedback. After, students practiced and corrected what was instructed during feedback and most were able to move on to the next skill.
